Helping a heroin Addict

It is devastating to find out that a friend or family member is a heroin addict. It is hard for an addict to quit using heroin. Anyone can get addicted to heroin, a business person or even a housewife.

The one time compassionate and responsible person can seem like they are a totally different person, they care about nothing but getting and using the the drug. This addiction can tear the best of family’s apart. When dealing with an heroin addict, let them know that you are there for them but you also do not want to take it too far, do not solve problems that the addiction is causing them. Try talking them into getting some help; try to make them realize what the addiction has done to their life and how they can look forward to a bright future without it.

An addict may not even realize how much it has taken over their life. It can be very frustrating that you cannot force a loved one to stop using heroin, it does no good to argue with them, they have to want to stop on their own before they can kick the addiction. If a person is in complete denial that they have an addiction, there is not much you can do. Try to suggest detox and treatment, let them know that they are not alone, but be prepared because they may fly off in a rage.

If an addict does seek help for their heroin addiction, be supportive and try not to be constantly suspicious that they are using again. Going through detox will probably be the hardest thing they will ever do in their life. Most addicts do not realize how their behavior has changed since they started using; some believe that having a family intervention to let that addict know just how they have changed may help. Maybe if they see that more than one family member can see how they changed, they will sit back and think of how things use to be.
