It doesn’t matter if you’re hooked on meth, heroin, or simply smoking; it’s challenging to kick any sort of addiction. This article is about the steps to kicking a substance abuse problem, and I hope that it will help you to overcome your addiction.

The first step of getting past an addiction is, of course, a detox. Detox is more commonly known as “withdrawal” and is the period when you stop using a substance and your body works to cleanse itself. Some serious addictions to substances such as heroin may involve a heroin detox at a treatment center, while those such as smoking can be done at home. No matter what you are addicted to, it is almost certain that there will be withdrawal symptoms. Even a detox from caffeine can cause headaches and cravings; other substances are much worse.

When trying to overcome your addiction and stop drug abuse you need to have a good support team. These people will be able to help you through your detox and on your entire journey to become substance-free. Choose your support team carefully as you don’t want to rely on someone who will end up leading you astray. For example, your old drinking buddies would not form a good support group if you were trying to kick alcohol.

How to overcome addiction

Some suggestions of people who would be good support include devoted family members, close friends, and others who have kicked their addictions. One of the best places to find a good support system is in 12 step meetings like NA that’s where I found mine and I use them still today. People on your support team should give you encouragement while also being someone you can be accountable to.

How to stop drug abuse

If you are serious about stopping drug abuse I would suggest that you join a group session such as AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or Celebrate Recovery. While you may not see the need for this, a group can help you to pinpoint things that make you want to use an addictive substance and help you to avoid these situations. Groups also provide great places to meet others and hear the experiences of people in the same situation as you.

Although it sounds unusual, studies should that having a relationship with a higher power can make you less likely to return to your addiction. By praying, attending church, and reading the Bible, you might find yourself depending less on your addiction and more on a supreme being. Just remember action is the key for the recovering drug addict.

How to beat addiction

Take up hobbies such as jogging, biking, rock climbing, sewing, painting, or writing will help you to beat addiction. These can help you to get your mind away from your addiction while giving you enjoyable past-times. Volunteering to do things like visiting the nursing home or raking a neighbor’s yard are also ways that you can fill in your spare time while doing something with a purpose.

When I first go clean I made a commitment to go for a long walk each day. I did this whether I felt like it or not and I found on the days that I did not want to go and pretty much had to force myself that before my walk was halfway through I was feeling better and glad that I went.

No matter how hard the road seems, do not give up on your battle to overcome an addiction. With the right amount of work and perseverance, you will come out a winner!
