How to overcome opiate addiction

Many people get addicted to drugs in all kinds of manners. One could become addicted to opiates by taking them for pain or one could get addicted to heroin on the streets of California. It does not matter if you are addicted to vicodin or heroin what matters is that you understand that you do indeed have an opiate addiction.

Once we surrender that we can no longer use drugs successfully then we are ready to get help. I will explain a couple of ways that you can learn how to stop using opiates. The first way I am going to tell you about today is the most difficult way I know of to get clean.

Cold turkey detox from opiates at home

Now this can be done in the comfort of your own home. One can actually tough it out one the couch while watching the sports channel on TV. I said comfort in your own home do not be misled by this because unless you have some medication for your stop using opiates at home detox you will suffer.

For those of you who intend to try this I am going to give you a couple of opiate withdrawal tips. The first one is a couple of days before you intend to quit using opiates stay awake as much as possible. This will help you to sleep through the worst of your withdrawal.

The next tip is to invite a friend or loved one to stay with you while you kick opiates. They can be there for moral support and to talk you out of giving up. Most people who try this give up before they are half way through because they are so miserable from their opiate withdrawal. Don’t let this scare you off because I know personally that it can be done.

Opiate addiction treatment

If you chose to stop using this drug and go through opiate withdrawal in a rehab or drug treatment setting you will be a lot more comfortable. The reason for this is that you will be taken care of by a medical team that actually want to see you recovery from this nasty addiction. They will be there around the clock should you feel like talking with someone They will also give you prescription medications to help ease the pain caused by your withdrawal from opiates.

This is by far the best way that I can suggest to stop opiate addiction in its tracks. This detox will take no more than 5 days.

Afterward I would go to residential treatment to enhance your recovery rate for success. There you will meet other addicts who are trying to quit opiates just like you. In residential treatment you will have to go to group, lectures, 12 step meetings like AA and NA, and lastly is addiction therapy which you will attend once per week. One thing you should do if you do not do anything else is to come up with a drug addiction recovery plan with your therapist for when you leave rehab.

Last summer on my 41st birthday was my breaking point, I had to choose between life and death. I had just had my 1st grandchild and didn’t want to end up dead or in one of these prisons in Michigan. I chose life and I’m glad I did.
