Addiction as a Disease that is cunning progressive incurable and fatal
Why is the addiction to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs considered a disease? Medical professionals classify addiction as a disease because it is chronic, progressive, has specific stages and is fatal. Addiction is mental or psychological dependence. It has seven definable stages. They are obsession, compulsion, increased tolerance, loss of control, denial, withdrawal and continued use despite negative consequences. Ultimately addiction leads to death. But for people under the control o f addiction none of that matters, they just want their drug of choice.
I have to admit that for a long time I could not understand the concept of addiction being a disease. I knew that once I started using anything that changed the way I felt I could not stop using drugs or drinking no matter how hard I tried. I mean when I thought of a disease I though of something like cancer or something similar. Then one day I was talking to my sponsor and he says what about looking at it like it is a disease of the mind and then I could understand the concept perfectly so now I now when I think of drug addiction or alcoholism I think as of being a disease of the mind this is a simple way to understand it if you are anything like me and struggling with whether addiction is a disease or not anyway I hope this helps some of you to get a betterĀ understanding.
But why are some people able to take a drink or try drugs and not become addicted? Many people have genetic predispositions that hard wire into them susceptibility to drug addiction or alcoholism. This is a scientific fact. The disease of addiction follows a series of very specific steps. The steps begin with denial. It is them followed by anger and bargaining. Finally it leads to depression. These predictable steps have led medical professionals to categorize this as a disease.
The disease of addiction
Most people agree that people who end up falling victim to this disease take the first series of actions of their own volition. The person who becomes addicted starts using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs on their own. But once they put these substances into their systems another force takes over. The disease process is like any other disease but, addiction can be successfully treated with a combination of therapies.
Now one thing to keep in mind is although addiction can be treated it if left untreated it is incurable and with continued use fatal If the addict is disciplined and determined enough to follow the medically designed recovery plan healing is almost certain to occur. With a little hard work and being committed to your recovery you can learn how to overcome addiction.
