I thought thatĀ  a lot of people could benefit from some techniques to help them to overcome drug and alcohol addiction. Breaking an addiction to a drug is much like breaking an addiction to an abusive spouse. The proven treatment of breaking the bizarre attachment to an abusive spouse is to leave the spouse and move as far away as you can. Obviously, that takes some careful planning.

The same treatment has been proven to work for recovering drug addicts. When a recovering addict is placed in a new environment with people who really do not know anything about his past, his behavior will change. If he becomes settled and happy in his new environment, he will not relapse. If he has not learned anything new coping skills to human confrontations regardless of where you live, he will relapse when confronted by what he presumes to be a disapproving contact.

I know for a fact that it has been proven that recovering drug addicts do well in new environments. Recovering addicts do well when shown constant attention and approval from contacts. Recovering addicts do well when put in a group activity where the group is carefully monitored and screened to keep it drug free.

Techniques to use to overcome addiction

Talk therapy is like a stimulant to addicts if the therapist does most of the talking. If the recovering addict is allowed to talk, he or she will wind down to a depressive state which isn’t really healthy. That is why a group activity with other people interacting and talking is a workable technique for a recovering addict to help them overcome addictoin. Reliving the past with drug addicts is pointless because the part of their past that brought them to their current situation was their use of narcotics to cope with life’s stressors. Learning to cope without narcotics is a successful drug recovery technique. That is where moving to a new environment helps the recovering person.

A new place with new faces and new challenges will stimulate the addicts mind to find new ways of coping with the new situation. Teaching the addict how to cope without drinking booze or usingĀ  drugs will give him/her the addiction recovery tools to use new coping techniques in his new place.

Lastly a drug and alcohol rehab is an excellent technique to use to overcome addiction. I have personally went to drug and alcohol rehab numerous times. If you go you can be medically detox from alcohol or drugs depending on which one you need detox for they however can detox you for both if need be.

Which ever way you choose to stop drinking and drugging is fine they all work but you will have to take action if you wish to get clean and sober. What I mean by action is not just going to one meeting a week because you are clean. Recovering from drug addiction will take more than that because you are going to have to be strong whenever temptation comes to you and whether you know it or not your are not cured so I would recommend that you go to a bare minimum of three meetings a week.

Good luck
