3 Ways Addiction Therapy Can Help a Struggling Addict
Millions of people are addicted to many different things and often seek addiction therapy. Once you are addicted to something no matter what it may be you are most likely going to need professional medical treatment in order to recover from your addiction. It is very rare if not unheard of for an addicted person to treat themselves successfully.
3 Ways Addiction therapy can help you stop using drugs
1. Many times a treatment program to stop drug abuse is needed, whether it be an inpatient treatment program or and outpatient treatment program. The type of treatment program often depends on what and how long you have been addicted. Medications are often used for detoxification of the substance you are addicted to. There are many types of medications available. Therapy is another very effective treatment for addiction.
2. Very often outpatient detox treatment centers use group therapy. This type of therapy often involves a leader that talks to you about addictions. Recovering addicts often lead these therapy groups so they know what they are talking about. Groups are usually made of about fifteen to twenty people depending on the size of the treatment center.
3. The leader of the drug therapy group will start by asking questions and call on a person in the group to talk about it. The questions are often about the addictions that the people in the group are addicted to. This gets the group to all join in the conversation making it easy for the addicted people to talk to each other and the leader of the group about their addictions. Often times one on one therapy is needed. Which ever therapy is used one thing we do know is that therapy works. If you have an addiction it would be wise to seek out substance abuse counseling.
Therapy for addiction
I can tell you this for sure I have had a whole lot drug addiction counseling in my lifetime. I started getting therapy for my drug addiction in 1986 when I went to rehab. While I was in rehab I got to thinking that I would like to be an addictions counselor. It was a nice thought because for most of my life all I thought about was the getting and using of drugs to get high.
Well this dream or epiphany did not pan out the reason being is that I could not stay clean long enough to go to school and get a degree. I went to rehab several times after this only to get out and relapse soon after.
Quit using drugs with Long term drug rehab to change your life
The last time I went to rehab things changed. I was tore up from the floor up looked like a dead man walking and checked into a 14 day rehab. While there I got to thinking about what I was going to do whey I left rehab. I new that I would not be able to stay clean if I went back to my home town being around the same old people that were still using drugs. Well there just happened to be a long term drug rehab right next door to the rehab I was in so I signed up but there were no openings. Anyway the day I was to leave the rehab I believe God stepped in because someone left the long term drug rehab and I got in.
I was there for 2 years in which time I went to therapy weekly for the whole 2 years. My therapist and I talked about me going back to school and guess what I did. I am currently attending WMU and am going to graduate very soon with a Bachelors degree in Social Work. Imagine that a dope fiend like me getting clean and going back to school. I love to write about this and my experience strengths and hopes when I can. My hope is that it may encourage someone else to stop using drugs and change their life. Once we stop using drugs lost dreams do awaken and new possibilities arise. “Believe that.”
Good luck
